The French Revolution was a period of political and social upheaval in France. It began with the meeting of the Estates-General in 1789 and is usually considered to end with Napoleon Bonaparte's coup in November 1799.
In ten years it overthrew the monarchy and spread ideas summed up in the motto liberty, equality, fraternity.
