Hypotenuse

In a right triangle, the side opposite the right angle is called the hypotenuse. The Pythagorean theorem says that its square equals the sum of the squares of the two other sides (the legs):

a² + b² = c²

It is named after the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, although the relation was known earlier, for example to Babylonian mathematicians.
